Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups unsweetened coconut yogurt (or any plant-based probiotic yogurt)
- 2 cups filtered water
- 3 tbsp maple syrup (or agave syrup)
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
- 1 tsp probiotic powder (from vegan probiotic capsules)
- ΒΌ tsp salt
- Β½ cup fresh orange juice (for extra flavor, optional)
Instructions
- Blend the Base: In a blender, combine coconut yogurt, filtered water, maple syrup, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and salt. Blend until smooth.
- Add the Probiotics: Open the probiotic capsules and add the powder to the mixture. Blend again briefly (just enough to combine).
- Ferment the Drink: Transfer the mixture to a clean glass jar with a loose lid or cheesecloth covering. Leave it at room temperature (68-75Β°F) for 12-24 hours to ferment. The longer it sits, the tangier it will be.
- Taste and Adjust: After fermentation, stir the mixture and taste. If you prefer it sweeter, add more maple syrup. If itβs too thick, mix in a bit of water.
- Strain and Chill: Strain the drink through a fine-mesh sieve if you want a smoother consistency. Transfer to a bottle or airtight container and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
- Serve Cold: Pour into small glasses and enjoy! Shake before drinking, as natural separation may occur.
Notes
- Flavor Variations: Add a splash of fresh orange juice for extra citrusy notes or blend in strawberries for a fruity twist.
- Sweetener Alternatives: Swap maple syrup for coconut sugar, date syrup, or monk fruit sweetener.
- Fermentation Tip: A warm environment speeds up fermentation. Keep it away from direct sunlight.
- Storage: Store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Shake well before drinking.
- Allergy Note: Ensure the probiotic powder is dairy-free and soy-free if needed.
